More Govco nonsense

The national safety group is now looking to ban cell phone use while driving nationally.  Not just the hand-held but also hands free.

You know, I can’t stand it when people are yapping away on their cell phone period.  I mean, why do people have to be on phones SO much?  They are on the phone when they drive, while walking thru the mall, while at their kids school play, at the spa, at the library, at the circus, at the movies….WHY???  What did you do ten years ago?  It’s just silly.

Now, with that being said, I am in NO way an advocate of Govco passing laws making it illegal to talk on the cell phone while driving.  It’s just more Govco intervening in our lives and taking away our freedoms.  All these “safety advocates” talk about the distracting nature of talking on the cell phone, which is true.  They talk about how it’s the same as driving drunk.  Ok, I might give you that.  They speak on how you are in another world while talking on the cell phone.  I agree it can get that way.  But…you know what?  So is:

Crying babies, putting on lipstick, listening to the radio, billboards on the freeway, your spouse arguing with you, your kids asking you a question, smells, tastes, news, uncomfortable clothes, heat, cold, snow, ice, sun, rain, wind, personal matters on your mind, fantasies on your mind, being hungry, being thirsty……you get the point.  Each and every one of these things can be a distraction so, is Govco going to ban all these things as well?

You know, there are already laws on the books about distracting driving.  If you cause an accident and they pull phone records that show you were chatting away on your phone – that can be big trouble for you.  So, why more laws when there are already some on the books?

Here is a great quote from the safety groups President, Janet Froetscher:

“It’s not just what you’re doing with your hands — it’s that your head is in the conversation and so your eyes are not on the road,”

So….if I have a conversation in my car with my spouse who is sitting in the passenger seat, that is wrong as well????  What a joke.

We need another moratorium on Govco intervention.
