“Madonna defies age as world tour kicks off”

This was the headline of a Reuters article today.  I remember when Tina Turner was touring you heard the same thing…how inspiring she was.  Huh.  Why is it that you never see headlines like this for the Rolling Stones?  All you hear are jokes about their age or why are they still touring, why don’t they just hang it up and such.

Is the difference because it’s a woman or because it’s Madonna?

The difference is that Madonna is that old and is still that hot. I mean, seriously, look at that body.

  2. Politics & Culture Says:

OK, Madonna is not hot. Nor was she ever hot. She is ugly. She has always been ugly.

  3. Kristi Says:

Oh, that’s right: I forgot that you get to decide everyone else’s opinion.

  4. Roland Says:

Kristi, aren’t you doing the same thing when you say the difference is that she is hot? Aren’t you deciding everyone else’s opinion as well?

Anyway, from different women I talk to, Mick exudes quite a sex appeal as well, even at 65. Plus, just look at his body. I don’t think there is an ounce of fat there.

All that being said, the news stories are not about who is hot and who is hot but about how she “defies age”. The Stones do more than she does (they don’t lip sync and put on twice as many shows) yet they are still ripped apart.

  5. Kristi Says:

She lip syncs? She didn’t when I saw her in concert. I suppose the difference for me is that I like Madonna and her commitment to changing musical styles and I’ve never been a fan of the Rolling Stones. It’s also interesting from the fact that she’s a woman and a mother. It’s unfortunate, but women are always thought of as more scandalous or more brave, or what have you when they do things like this and have a family. I’m sure any of the Congresswomen, party not withstanding, would tell you this, and I know that most of my friends who are women with good careers would tell you the same thing. It’s not fair from many standpoints, including that the Stones get much less press, and also that women are not allowed to have lives outside of the home, but it’s the way it is.

  6. Roland Says:

Actually, the Stones are the pioneers of changing music styles. From their early pop covers in the 60’s to acid rock to hard rock to disco to the 80’s, 90’s and today if you listen, they keep their roots while changing with the times. Sometimes to my chagrin (Miss you, Harlem Shuffle).

Oh, and I agree with Poli…never thought she was attractive. MAYBE a bit in 1984 but that didn’t last long.

  7. Just This Girl Says:

Maybe the difference is album sales. The last Rolling Stones album to hit number one in the US was in 1981. Madonna’s last number one album was released in April of this year. The United States is hardly the beginning and end of the world that we like to think it is, but the majority of the Madonna articles I saw about her 50th were written in the US.

  8. Roland Says:

How many tours has she done and how long of a tour? How about gross tour sales? She doesn’t even hold a candle to the Stones in regards to number of tours, number of shows, length of tours and gross revenue from that tour…and they are in their mid 60’s!

So, if it is about money, the Stones blow her away.

  9. Just This Girl Says:

No, in her 28 years of touring, she has not made as much money as the Stones. However, in her 28 years, she’s had the highest grossing tour several times, not to mention that she’s doing one right now. I don’t mean to deny the influence or importance of The Stones (I would NEVER), but I can see why they would focus on Madonna’s career when her 50th birthday falls when it does.

  10. Roland Says:

However, I don’t recall as much fuss being made about the Stones when they hit 50 and 60. So, I wonder is it because it’s Madonna or the woman issue.
